First Project:
A Commemorative Plate
I chose to commemorate my plate to my hobby of knitting so that I could more intently focus on the ceramics techniques. I had not previously had any formal ceramics instruction.
Foot attached onto first plate. I knit a sample of 2x2 ribbing, and used it as a texture by passing it through the clay slab press.
Bottom of both plates, with blue slip etched with Knit/Purl mirror script words.
Tops of both plates, with blue slip etched with rib pattern.
Both have ribbed texture.
I made the plate on the right first, and attached the ribbed texture as tiles.
For the second plate I ran the entire slab through the ribbed texture, and smoothed the trapezoids that I wanted to cover in slip.
I attached a twisted clay edging around the second plate to symbolize yarn.
The middles are etched with a graph representation of the 2x2 rib stitch.
Sideview of both plates stacked.
We were asked to define a plate in a class discussion, and a classmate suggested "stackable" as a defining characteristic of plates, so I wanted to see if I could make "stackable" plates.
Both feet are imprinted with the ribbed texture, the orientation of the stitches is different.
The edge of the bottom plate is etched with another symbolic representation of a 2x2 rib knit stitch.
The two plates, completely formed, stacked, covered in slip and etched.
